PayByPhone introduces automatic number plate recognition technology to 29 car parks throughout London to create a seamless parking experience
30 October 2015 – PayByPhone has begun rolling out automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) - also known as license plate recognition (LPR) technology across 29 car parks throughout London. The aim is to alleviate parking stress and help drivers save even more time by automating the payment process, which could make the difference between catching and missing their train.
An initial trial period introduced the ANPR technology in the North Greenwich car park in 2014. During that time, 422,932 vehicles entered the space with over half of the drivers opting to pay for parking via their mobile instead of traditional kiosks. As a result, the technology will be rolled out to 29 additional commuter car parks throughout London over the next 18 months, allowing drivers to pay for their parking automatically.
PayByPhone's Dash technology will provide drivers with three easy ways to pay for parking; at ‘smart’ cash and card machines, via the Dash mobile application or by registering online for automatic payment (AutoPay) upon arrival to the car park, allowing busy commuters to register for an account based billing solution. The ANPR technology instantly recognises registered plate numbers and takes payment from the driver’s account automatically, removing the need to pay at a machine or even display a ticket.
Using the ANPR technology and mobile app will ultimately change the way consumers interact with the parking process. Effectively, drivers who have registered for the service need never worry about anything except parking their car, locking their doors and getting on with their day. The process of payment is taken care of, which means an unavoidable daily task just got easier. A wider roll-out of this new digital capability began with Debden station late this summer, with the Dash parking app available to download in both the App Store and Google Play.
Dash cashless payment technology was formerly owned by Adaptis before being acquired by PayByPhone in 2014. PayByPhone has more than 10 million registered users worldwide and services more than 300 cities globally including London, Paris, San Francisco and Geneva to name just a few.
Kush Parikh, President, PayByPhone global comments: “We are extremely pleased to have launched this off street parking technology in the UK. This is one of the first UK parking sites to adopt Apple Pay, allowing users to pay for their parking and tube rides using consistent contactless technology.”
“It will revolutionize the way that commuters interact with the parking experience and is a sign of what’s to come in an industry that is constantly adapting to ultimately virtualise the parking experience for consumer.”
