PayByPhone secures new three year contract with Islington Council

Islington Council has re-selected PayByPhone as its cashless parking provider for another three years.  The popular phone payment service has been available in the London Borough of Islington since 2008 and currently accounts for around 40 per cent of its total parking income.  The popularity of the service with motorists has enabled Islington Council to secure substantial cost savings over the last three years, including an 85 per cent reduction in the cost of cash collection, 51 per cent reduction in maintenance and repair costs and the elimination of machine replacement costs.

In 2011, spurred on by high motorist adoption of PayByPhone and the desire to offer the widest possible choice of payment methods, Islington became the first UK council to offer motorists the choice to pay for their parking in cash through the UK’s largest retail payments and services network, PayPoint.

The cash payment facility is available in over 70 of the busiest parking locations in Islington and accounts for around 12 per cent of the PayByPhone transactions processed in these areas.  The success of cash payments has enabled Islington Council to make further cost savings by removing or partially disabling more than 80 pay and display machines in these locations.

Robin Bevan, Commercial CEO at PayByPhone, said: “The fact that Islington Council has chosen us again for cashless parking services is great news because it demonstrates how our innovative payment methods give councils the flexibility to deliver a great customer experience and make valuable savings at the same time.  As a PayPoint company, we are able to offer a ready-made, proven and long-term solution for cash payments that no other parking provider can offer.”
