How we as a business treat our planet matters to us. It forms the basis of our business decision-making. We ensure our work is driven by an all-encompassing respect for our environment so we can leave a sustainable legacy for future generations. To that end, in 2019 we became Carbon Neutral in the UK, and in 2020, we took that one step further and achieved Carbon Neutral Plus status, which means we offset our carbon footprint by more than 10%. And in 2021 we were certified Carbon Reduced.
How our industry and our clients treat our planet matters to us, too. Our industry and related sectors are often seen as at odds with the environment. We want to change that, and we take our role in finding solutions to combat it seriously.
Our multi-award-winning initiatives, like Meters for Trees, and thoughtful solutions, like Emissions Based Parking tariffs, help our clients make a positive impact on the environment. Our cashless ethos in itself offers a myriad of environmental benefits, including removing the need for millions of pay-and-display tickets. But most importantly cashless parking payment technology improves air quality by removing the need for enforcement and maintenance vehicles, which would otherwise be on the roads, belching out harmful tailpipe emissions.
Travel is part of our daily lives, whether commuting to work or meeting family and friends, so we strive to make that as environmentally accountable as possible.
We always challenge ourselves to go one step further, so we weren’t satisfied with simply attaining Carbon Neutral status. In 2021, we were certified Carbon Reduced.
The first carbon reduction programme of its kind in the UK and a multi-award-winning initiative, Meters for Trees promotes an eco-friendlier way to park. Launched in 2019, Meters for Trees is based on a simple and cost-effective principle: reduce the number of parking machines and replace them with trees. Meters for Trees works in partnership with the Portel-Pará REDD project, a Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) audited project in the Amazon rainforest that combats deforestation.
In partnership with Eden Reforestation Projects, Green Christmas helps drivers combat climate change as they go about their daily life during the festive period, simply by paying to park with our app. Green Christmas plants trees in mangrove projects in Madagascar to support reforestation and to promote a better quality of life for the people who live there.
Our work in making a positive change for the environment has been recognised by prominent global award schemes. We won three prestigious 2019 Green Apple Environment Awards, and two 2019 Green World Awards, as well as an esteemed SEAL Environmental Initiative Award at the SEAL Business Sustainability Awards 2020.
